From the winery:
Vineyards: Exceptional old vine fruit was sourced from the famed Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. Vine age 35—120 years old. Yield 3 tonnes per hectare.
Vintage Conditions: The growing season started well with above average winter rainfall but was followed by well below average spring and summer rainfall coupled with warm temperatures. Fortunately our vines were in perfect balance with healthy canopies assisting even ripening and fruit flavour development. Harvest commenced very early in late January. Calm Indian summer conditions began in early March which were perfect for finishing off vintage. The resultant 2018 wines are of exceptional quality featuring intense depth of colour, astounding aromatic purity plus richness and brightness on the palate.
Vinification: Fermented in 1 and 2 tonne open fermenters. Extended maceration was employed to enable good tannin development so the wine is soft and approachable early. Matured for 16 months in a mix of 40% new oak and 60% 2—3 year old oak hogshead barrels (90% French / 10% American).
Tasting Notes
Colour: Dark purple, almost impenetrable.
Aroma: Black fruits abound. Dark plums and blackberry notes intermingle with anise and fresh spice.
Palate: Bright and juicy with a wonderfully rich mid-palate that maintains balance and finishes with texture. Flavours of dried spice and dark berry fruits add freshness and dimension.Peak Drinking: Great drinking now but this wine will also benefit from 10—12 years of careful cellaring.

And now on to our review:
The 2018 Bishop by Ben Glaetzer Barossa Valley Shiraz begins with deep, inviting aromas of ripe blackberry, raspberry and plums with nice spice, a little black pepper and touches of vanilla, chocolate and smoked meat. It's a wonderful start.
Tasting reveals a meaty Shiraz with lots of dark, juicy fruit and plenty of Syrah character. It features a very smooth and lush mouthfeel, great depth, good acidity and similar flavors to the nose including all the secondary touches. It is at its best after a couple hours of air so plan appropriately, but it's still tasting quite fresh at this point and has plenty of aging ability.
It ends dry, long, savory and a bit grippy and was even a bit better on day 2. Lovely, balanced, and delicious, this is a fantastic example of Shiraz. We put it at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating.
